Obituary:
Bob "Bobcat" Bradfield
Mar 21, 1961-Nov 1, 2019
Aptos
On November 1, 2019, Robert Bradfield of Aptos died suddenly in a biking accident in Santa Cruz. He was 58 years young. Bob was the son of Robert Bradfield and Nancy Elsden Bradfield and was born and lived briefly in Lima, Peru, then Ithaca, New York and a year in Cambridge, England. He spent most of his formative years in Orinda California, graduated from Miramonte High School (1979), then California State University Chico (1987).
After college, Bob immersed himself into his passion of biking, working at South Valley Bikes then launched his own business "Bobcat Bicycles" in Salinas in 1994. The business, after twenty-five years, remains open under the care of Craig Tucker and other loyal staff that have been there since day one. In addition to bicycles Bob had a zeal for driving racecars. One week before his death he won two SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) 2019 year-end Championships and was awarded Driver of The Year with his White Miata #36. An incredibly talented driver, he was continuously supported by Rusty Carl of Rusty's Repair in Santa Cruz. Their unique and treasured partnership since 2002 earned them a total of twelve regional championships and one national championship.
Bob loved riding his mountain bike with friends in the UC Santa Cruz hills, Nisene Marks Park and Ft. Ord. What he loved most of all was being with his friends and family and his daily trips to the forest and beach with his beloved dogs Beauty and Marko. He was generous, larger than life, loud and funny. He had a contagious smile, endless energy and an enormous enthusiasm for life and friendships.
Bob's love of life and the outdoors was perfectly complemented by equestrian Annie Hutchins, whom he met in Nisene Marks Park. Their love was immediate, and they melded horses and bikes together and married in 1994. Their home was in Aptos for 30 years, enjoying shared beach sunsets, horse/bike adventures and hosting guests.
He is survived by his wife Annie, mother Nancy Montoya (Vic) Monterey, sisters Wendy (Mike) Scheck, Orinda; Debbie (Jeff) Chaney, Oceanside; nephews Brandon Scheck, Kyle Chaney (Leslie), nieces Lauren Scheck, Hannah Chaney, sister-in-law Buffy and father-in-law Warren. His father Robert Bradfield predeceased him in 2017.
Bob's sudden and shocking absence leaves a gaping hole for many. Family, countless friends and valued Bobcat Bicycle customers will miss him beyond belief. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a high school bicycle scholarship fund

Deceased Date: 1983-04-27
Obituary:
Mark MacLeod Ellsworth
BERKELEY - Memorial services will be held tomorrow for 22 old Mark MacLeod Ellsworth, who died Wednesday. A native of Orinda, Mr. Ellsworth graduated from Miramonte High School, where he was on the water polo and track teams.

Mr. Ellsworth broke his neck in a diving accident in Honolulu 2 1/2 years ago and was confined to a wheelchair, but managed to overcome his disability and was studying at the University of California at Davis prior to his death of complications stemming from injury.

"He required full time attendant care, he had no wrist or finger movement, but he could get around in an electric wheelchair, used a mouthstick to type, a voice-activated recorder to do his term papers," said his father, Robert Ellsworth, a Berkeley attorney and real estate developer.

"He was going into political science, in hopes of going either into law or the government. Basically, he was trying to let people know that regardless of your disability, you could be active and be a useful citizen."

He was the grandson of the late Clair MacLeod, a former mayor of Piedmont and first president of BART.

Besides his father, he is survived by his mother, Patricia MacLeod Ellsworth, and younger sister Dana P. Ellsworth, of Orinda and his grandmother, Kathryn P. MacLeod.

Services will be at 11a.m. tomorrow at Bayview Chapel, 2424 Grove St., Berkeley.

Sybille Grote

Birth Date: 1961-09-20
Deceased Date: 2006-05-01
Obituary:
GROTE Sybille entered into eternal peace and ascended the stairway to Heaven on May 1, 2006. She was born September 20, 1961 in Melbourne Australia to Udo and Ingrid Grote. At a young age, her family immigrated by ship to the United States taking up residence in the Bay Area of northern California. One of her most memorable sights was seeing the Golden Gate Bridge for the first time as they were entering San Francisco Bay. Her family lived in Orinda, California where she graduated from high school. She enjoyed growing up hearing the sights and sounds of the Bay Area with her many friends, especially being with her best friend, Major, her dog and riding her horse Selena. After graduation, she worked as a licensed cosmetologist and excelled at everything she did. She discovered that her passion was being behind the wheel of a commercial truck and loved the responsibility. That passion brought her to northern Nevada where she worked as a drive, enjoying the area and many friends who were privileged to know her. Most recently she worked for Harco Trucking, LLC as a "Real Estate Relocator". She worked on some of the largest highway and construction projects, both residential and commercial in the northern Nevada area.

She is survived by her mother Ingrid Miller, father Udo Grote and sister Michelle Grote. There are also many family members in Germany who will miss her deeply, and of course, her loving companion and soul mate who submitted this, Pat.

Memorial service and Celebration of Life to be held June 24 at 6pm at Wadsworth Masonic Lodge, 2425 Pyramid Hwy., Sparks, Nevada. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Nevada Humane Society on behalf of Sybille at 2825 Longley Lane, Ste. B, Reno, NV 89502.

Me and Scott trying to out-cool the Marlboro Man.
Bob Chickering - September 15th, 2019
Scott was a brilliant and talented man.  It seemed that his talents and capabilities were almost unfair.  He was a shining star, a great guy, a celebrity in his industry (mainframe computers with IBM), masterful acrobat on a mogul field, incredible guitarist, beautiful singer, brilliant student and a charismatic person.  I considered him a “genius”.  He was that brilliant.  He retired at 53, having nested his egg.

I met Scott on the playground of Pine Grove Jr. High by getting in a fist fight with him over bumping into each other on skateboards.  It was a pointless scuffle foisted upon us by our peers that ended quickly, because the recess bell rang.  At the end of the day, we found each other and laughed about how ridiculous it was and became lifelong friends.

We went through our time at Miramonte High School as close friends, and quickly discovered our shared love and capabilities at skiing moguls and steeps.  His parents’ cabin at Tahoe Vista was to become our go-to place, once we were able to drive, and Squaw Valley was our go-to steeps.  Scott and I would drop into mogul fields, find a “line” and dance down, one behind the other.  The exhilaration of it was incredible, especially when done under the chairlift and encouraged by onlookers.  One of my worst memories with Scott was in 1984.  We boarded KT22 at Squaw, as we had done many times before.  It was our first run of the day, and we were excited for the moguls of West Face that we had done so many times before.  We got to the second tower with our chair still swinging from our boarding.  Suddenly, it snapped off the cable and we slammed onto the rocky ground.  I was OK, but Scott was struggling from having the wind knocked out.  We were surrounded by onlookers and then whisked away to the Squaw Valley office.  If it had detached 2 minutes later, I wouldn’t be writing this.  The amazing thing about Scott was that even into his 50s, he trained at Whistler during the summer to master mogul skiing.

After Miramonte, we both enrolled at Cal.  We were in different fraternities, but as in high school, spent many weekends at Squaw, busting our asses on moguls.  During the summers we skied and boated on lake Tahoe with our friends.  In 1982, we backpacked through Europe with fellow Miramonte buddy, Greg Thompson along with 2 of his Davis fraternity brothers.  It was an incredible trip – a youth experience that influenced my future life of travel.

Later in life, as I raised my family and he keynote spoke at worldwide computer conventions, we kept in touch by phone, visited when possible and tried to stay connected.  We even skied together, although I was not able to do what we did in our 20’s and 30’s, while he had actually improved and was more aggressive.  I’m happy that I was able to stay connected to my old friend Scott.  He was a brilliant and talented man.

Thomas A. Kane

Birth Date: 1961-06-22
Graduation year: 1979
Deceased Date: 2021-07-19
Obituary:
Dear class—
It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Tom Kane’s passing. He was a dear friend and a gentle soul who loved LOUD! music. Tom was a faithful ally with a dry wit who would never push himself on anyone, but he was always there for you, whenever you needed him. I will miss his gracious, easy-going manner and his loving acceptance. I will miss his constant defense of the Ducks and his dedication to Jerry Garcia’s music. In short, I will miss him.
—Les Enloe

Our brother/son Thomas Albert Kane passed away on July 19, 2021, in San Francisco at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, surrounded by his brothers and sister. Tom was born on June 22, 1961, in King City, California – a small town in Monterey County – during the time his father, Peter E. Kane MD, was serving in the US Army at Fort Hunter Liggett. Tom was eventually raised in Orinda, California by his father and his late mother Helen (after stops along the way in San Francisco, Pasadena, Lafayette, and Moraga). Following Miramonte HS, Tom attended and graduated from University of Oregon. He was a proud Duck! After college, he moved back to the East Bay and worked for AT&T for many years. He was a dear friend to all who crossed paths with him, and probably bought them all a CD for a band they had never heard of. A fifth-generation San Franciscan, Tom was a vibrant part of its culture and nightlife until his very last day on this Earth. Tom was the goofy, loving sibling to Peter (Diane), Robert (Alison) and Nancy (Timojhen). He became the doting uncle to Kyle, Hunter, Devon, Troy, and Darby. Tom was additionally the top-requested pet-sitter for Nigel, Toby, Trixie, Louis Vee, and many more. If you’d like to honor Tom, listen to the Grateful Dead album American Beauty from start to finish. It is a fitting tribute. What a long, strange trip it's been.

Kimzey Van Siclen

Birth Date: 1961-01-28
Graduation year: 1979
Deceased Date: 2020-12-04
Obituary:
She was blonde, blue-eyed and blessed with a smile that always seemed as fresh and warm as a Malibu sunrise. Yet for anyone willing to look past the sunny California Girl image, Kimzey Van Siclen, who died earlier this month at the too-young age of 59, was so much more -- a fiercely loyal friend who gladly sacrificed her own needs to help others, a loving daughter who helped care for her own parents, Maragret and William, in their later years and a cherished (though sometimes vexing) "little sister" to the rest of Van Siclen clan.

Let the record show that Kimzey was born on Jan. 28, 1961 in downtown Los Angeles, stood just under five-and-a-half-feet tall and was named for her maternal grandmother, Margaret Amanda Kimzey Hightower. She loved stray cats, classic rock (especially The Eagles) and antique boxes -- the more ornately decorated the better. Though she never attended college, she was also a voracious reader whose knowledge of history, culture and current events was second to none.

Despite the Covid 19 pandemic, Kimzey's last days were spent in the loving company of friends and family -- some in person and some through the digital bonds of computers and cellphones. As soon as it becomes safe to travel again, many of those same people will gather to scatter her ashes at sea, as per her wishes.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to American Cancer Society or ASCPA in her memory.
